Mother-in-law Update

Some of y’all know that Hub’s mom has been in the hospital for the last couple of weeks.

For those of you that didn’t know … she’s been in the hospital for the last couple of weeks.

She’s in ICU … has been for the last week or so … and until this morning, was stable.  Turns out she’s not eating and the feeding tube the docs wanted to insert nasally wasn’t.  So, they’re going to have to insert a feeding tube in her side.

The question I have is this:

Could all of this have been prevented?

She originally complained of pain in her back and so Hub’s father took her to the doctor.  That was about 3 weeks ago.

The docs found nothing.

She continued to complain about pain in her back.  Back they went to the hospital.  This time she was admitted and the docs began testing.  All kinds of tests:  C-T scans, MRIs with contrast, the works.

The docs found nothing and sent her home.

A few days later, she was still in pain … only now it was worse.  Back to the hospital.

Nothing found … sent her home.

Finally, two weeks ago, the pain was beyond too much for her and back to the hospital they went.

After many tests, the doctors concluded she had an infection, possibly began as a simple UTI but inflamed when she was catheterized on her previous two hospital stays.

Oh yeah … and the contrast they used for her MRI?  Her body didn’t metabolize it.  It had collected and began to harden in her stomach & intestines.  Turns out there was something in her incredibly vast medical records detailing the fact that she’s had previous adverse reactions to the contrast.  Wow.  Color me shocked that the medical staff didn’t catch that!

What had begun as a simple UTI had progressed to something that was now seriously threatening her life.

So, long story long, she’ll have the feeding tube procedure done in a few hours.

Prayers for her & the family are appreciated.
