The Essence of Blonde, II

There are times when my skim-reading skills fail me. Case in point:

Yesterday was the first of three days for registration for our students. All students must register. We’re expecting an enrollment of over a 1,000 when we open our doors on August 27th.

I told Head Cheese that I’d be happy to help out anywhere he needed me during registration … all three days.

When I read the letter he sent out, I read 8:30-4:00 on Thursday & Friday, 8:30-11:30 on Saturday.

I showed up yesterday, got my assignment. I was working happily & steadily alongside a colleague for a couple of hours when the following conversation ensued:

Parent: How long are you here to this morning?
Me: We’ll close the doors at 11:30 for lunch, but we’ll open back up at 1:00.
Parent: Oh, okay. I’ll come back after lunch. How late are y’all here ’til?
Colleague: We’ll be here until 7pm.
Me: 7!

Oy.

  1. The REALLY sad part was I didn’t get the times right for any part of our registration extravaganza. I thought we were due back from lunch each day at 1:00 and told my new colleague on day 2 this. We were actually due back at 12:30.

When she asked me what time we were supposed to arrive on Saturday, I looked at her and said, “Are you really sure you want to be asking me this question?”
