231 Years Ago

On this day 231 years ago, one of my ancestors signed the Declaration of Independence.

I don’t know much about Stephen Hopkins from Rhode Island other than this fact.

I imagine that he, like all the signers of the Declaration, were tired of Britain and all that the crown expected of them and if Popeye were a real person and had lived back then, he probably would have summed it up this way:

I’ve had all I can stands, I can’t stands NO MORE!

So we celebrate the 231st birthday of our country today.

What would the signers think of their country today? What would they think of the country that they fought so hard to establish so long ago?

The land of the free, home of the brave;
Where “freedom of speech” holds true for some members of society, but not all.
A land where people are more concerned WITH the party but not WHY we celebrate.
A country where the almighty dollar carries more clout than a man’s good name.
For better or for worse, there’s no place I’d rather be.
Happy Birthday, America.
